Thrifting It

Did you know that it is cool to shop at thrift stores?  Well, it is.  And here in Utah, we are totally spoiled with Deseret Industries, or DI, as us locals like to call it.  It is a chain of thrift stores owned by the LDS church.  They are plentiful, and you can always find a bargain.  The stores are kept relatively clean and well organized....for a thrift store.  My mom used to take us to DI once in awhile when I was a kid - and it was so humiliating.  I would be so worried the whole time I was there that I'd see someone I knew from school.  And a few times I did - and then I would quickly duck behind a rack of old jeans or a 10 ft long gold couch or something.  And just look at me now - shamelessly shopping at thrift stores  - and blogging about it for the whole world (or my 15 loyal readers) to see!  How far I've come!

Recently, I've seen a few blogs where people have shown their thrift store finds, and their thrift store re-fashions.  (that is where you buy something ugly, or ill fitting from a thift store, and you make it beautiful with your amazing sewing and tailoring skills).  I was inspired to head out to my local DI to see what treasures I could find.  I'm not quite ready to re-fashion something yet....I need some more ambition and skills for that - but it will come.

So, the other day while both of my kids were at school (which is an amazing luxury that I am still getting use to) I spent at least an hour wandering around DI.  It was so fun - little like a treasure hunt!  You just really never know what you are going to find.  So, this is what I got:

Awesome bike for Lucy $20
Its in great shape.  Not exactly a cool vintage thrift store find - but a total deal anyway.  This is the first bike we have bought for Lucy.  We brought it home and she promptly got a bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a tooth brush and spent an hour making it shine.  I love that she didn't blink an eye or feel bad for even one second that we bought her a used bike from a thrift store.  She loves it and has been riding it non stop.

Awesome Cowgirl boots for Lucy - $3
Seriously - aren't these cool?  Can you see the little cut-outs at the top?  We are cowgirl boot lovers in this house, and these ones are terrific!  (I was going to say awesome, but I already did, like 3 times in this post alone.  So, terrific it is).  One of the zippers is broken (so I was able to get them for $3 instead of the $6 price which was marked).  I called a few boot repair shops in town and the zipper can be fixed for about $12.  Of course, that quadruples the cost of the boot - but its totally worth it, because really - did you look?  They are so cool!

(plus, they are real leather)

I also got a couple of skirts for Violet, like this Mini Boden beauty - in perfect condition and just her size! ($3)!!
