Happy Pioneer Day!

We were brave (or stupid, or adventurous) and went to the Days of 47 parade this morning. As a child, I always watched it on TV while my mom made us an incredible breakfast. That is the perfect way to enjoy a parade in my opinion: on the couch. I was trying to keep the fact that there was a parade today a secret from my kids, but Lucy heard about it and really wanted to go. So we woke up this morning, jumped on the train, and went downtown. I thought it would be miserable, and I was right. Sweltering hot and nowhere to sit (because everyone stakes out the good spots and camps out 24 hours before the parade starts). We found a spot where we could see the parade pretty well, but we were in direct sun. I stood behind a lamp post for some shade. We watched for about an hour before the girls and I started whining that we were thirsty and wanted to go home. I think some year we should camp out in Liberty Park the night before the parade. I don't think I could make it an annual thing, but it might be fun to do, once, while the kids are young.

On our way:

I don't recall what exactly she was looking at when I took this picture, but from the look on her face, it was pretty interesting.

I have no idea, and I don't want to know. This was written on a window on 200 East, right along the parade route. EWWWWWWWW! How many innocent Utah children were exposed to these words today?

Now we are off to Jacob's sister's house for a BBQ. Happy Pioneer Day everyone!

I was feeling bad i didn't take my girls, and this makes me feel better! I hate crowds almost as much as I hate hot weather, so I figured I would not be happy.

Hope the rest of your day was fun! :)

I can't remember the last time I have been to a parade. They aren't really my thing.

And where in the heck was that window? EEEWWWW.

The first time I went to the salt lake parade as a child I was thinking "wtf, no candy?" ok, so i probably didn't think wtf at the time, but I sure felt like it. How can there be a parade with no candy? That's like having sex without the orgasm.

The best parade I've ever been to is the Lehi parade. It's actually pretty fun, even for adults. The worst parade is the Draper one. I felt like it was one long overdrawn commercial. Next year we should plan something non-parade-like-fun with some friends.

I think it would be fun to go to a small Utah town for a pioneer day parade. It would be much more manageable. Maybe Spring City? (tammy??)

hehe! I had no idea Pioneer Day was so huge. But then again, it IS Utah. Out here all they do is dress up as pioneers for the ward parties. And, of course someone makes a cobbler or grinds wheat or something.

Now a parade would be AWESOME.
